Thanks to everyone who helped me out in April. I twisted my syattic nerve and ruptured a disk during the ice storm and had to spend a couple of days in the hospital and three weeks in bed. I’m much better now but am still building back some strength and taking life gingerly. Special Thanks to Janet Smith and Robin Drake for running the Library. Thank you also for everyone who sent cards and called. The calls really helped break up my day.

One of the good things that happened from all this is I read and read and read!

I probably read about 15 books. So here is my review of a few books. Just Take My Heart, by Mary Higgins Clark: I had the ending figured out for this book by just reading the dust jacket, but Mary Higgins Clark has once again proved that the journey is worth more than the final destination. Very good book and well worth your time.  The book that was the most surprising was by Dixie Cash, Don’t Make Me Choose Between You and My Shoes: Glenda Alexander had asked me to buy this set because all the teachers at school were reading them. You take a couple of Beauticians who would rather be detectives, who are very nosy and personable, add a lot of southern style and humor, and you have a fantastic novel that keeps you on the edge of hilarity. It’s a laugh out loud mystery that leaves you reaching for the next book in the series. The First Family by David Baldacci left a bitter taste in your mouth as another sex scandal novel about the first family. Kidnapping and multiple killings kept you on the edge of your seat. While this is a captivating book the theme of corrupt politicians and the evil people around them is rather tired.

KANSAS TOWNS SOUNDS

(This Poem was written to celebrate Kansas Day 2009)

Roger A. Davis

State capital is Topeka

Horse racing capital: Eureka

Where I grew up: Attica

We had a fishing lease near Zenda

Salt Mine Museum in Hutchinson

Martina McBride’s birthplace: Sharon

County Seats: Hugoton, Holton, McPherson

A town near where I bought two bison: Canton

Many small towns like Chautauqua

Town near grandparents’ ranch: Kiowa

Baseball Hall of Famer, Joe Tinker, lived in Muscotah

Air capital and the largest city: Wichita

Chief White Hair’s village: Oswego

Where Molly, my bulldog, lives now: Geneseo

Headquarters for corporations: De Soto

Other small bergs: Mankato, Paxico and Tyro

Liberal, of pancake fame, and unincorporated Wayne

Harrah’s backed out of Mulvane

Town named for Civil War Union general and U.S. Senator, James H.: Lane

Bartlett Arboretum, a Dixie Chicks connection in Belle Plaine

Cawker, Junction and Arkansas: many a last name city

But this poem is getting long, so I’m going to take pity

I challenge you to write about your state and be witty

Just one more: My home, Marquette, ends with an “E”

Our visit to the Salt Mine Museum

Reading is it’s own reward, but not for Hardtner kids. July 19th prizes were awarded to every child reading over 100 books those winners were: Bayli Hyde, Katie Reid, Trishell Reed, Dalton Black, Trey Robinson, Haylie Drake, Jeffrey Schultz, Baylan Alexander, Hesston Alexander, Holly Drake, Kelsi Smith, Neal Gugelmeyer, Nora Gugelmeyer, Kutter Jewell, Gatlin, Jewell, and Briggs Jewell. Winning also but not present was Chloe Blunk. After prizes were awarded it was off to the Hutchinson Underground Salt Museum. Twenty-two children and eleven adults enjoyed the cool trip down into the salt mine. We enjoyed the tram ride through the tunnels, picking up little bags of salt and taking pictures of the exhibits. We were awed by the bacterium that is trapped in pockets of salt and is older than dinosaurs. The movie costumes and props were fun to see and everyone got something from the gift shop. After the trip we ate lunch at Freddie’s Frozen Custard and then came home. It was a wonderful trip and a nice reward for a job well done.

The Library held an Open House October 18th to celebrate our 95th birthday. We had Fifty-two people help us celebrate. Those paying their Friends of Hardtner Library dues received a CD Rom with pictures of old time Hardtner, Kiowa, Sun City and Lake City plus two PowerPoint presentations of Hardtner and 2008 Summer Reading. The Friends of the Library and Library Board members served refreshments. At 5:30 we had 22 youth and 8 adults for the Pizza Party. Door Prizes were won by, Louise Ewing, Della Trotter, Kim Nevil, and Yvette Papon.  All of our children received goodie bags with party favors. Silly String, pictures and games were the highlights of the day. In honor of this event we have added four history displays of pictures of old time Hardtner and have started a rotating quilt display.
